THE USES OF LANGUAGE IN BOOK WRITING
A language is an instrument of thoughts. It is the most common medium for the communication of ideas, views, feelings, requests, and needs. It is the man’s ability to use language that takes him from the ranks of lower animals, distinct him as rational creative among other animals.
Language is a major factor in the development of man. It is a tool for learning and self discovery.
The language of any race is the sound symbol by which individuals communicate with one another, be it English, Hausa, Yoruba, French, German, polish, Spanish, Igbo etc.
There are four basic skills of language such as
1. Listening skill
2. Reading skill
3. Speaking skill
4. Writing skill
Language can be used for the following purposes:
1. Language is a means of social interaction
2. A means of expressing feelings, thoughts and ideas
3. It is an instrument of thinking
4. It serves as social regulator
5. For ceremonial purposes
6. For keeping records
7. Exchange of information
8. For spreading and propagating good news to mankind etc.
Language is in two major forms
- Oral and Written forms.
For the purpose of this lecture, we shall discuss on written channel of communication.
This is a one way channel whereby the reader reads what a writer writes and not able to ask questions immediately but to digest the ideas putting across to them. The primary function of any language is to communicate with one another.
Whenever we are using a language as a medium of communication, there must be a language. This indicates that in the process of communication with any language, there must be a sender of such message and a receiver of the same message.
Some important things to consider in writing an effective book.
- The language to be used
- The uses of punctuation marks
- The uses of imagery
- The target audience
- Grammatical structures
- The use of dictionary for vocabulary development and correct spelling of words.
Finally, a good writer must be a good reader. As a Christian writer, we must create time for reading various relevant Christian literature.
